Google Hardware Store
Made by Google | Dominique Ansel
For the Google Hardware Store, we designed and built an indoor treehouse around an interior building column within an empty SOHO storefront. At two stories tall, the treehouse combined modern LVL framing to create a sheath around the column to avoid compromising its structural nature —a highly scrutinized process. The treehouse exterior was clad in 80 year old reclaimed weathered oak barn wood, and integrated with all of Google’s latest technology, including sound systems and voice-controlled devices, all while maintaining a whimsical childlike environment. The treehouse was designed to be dressed and redecorated for various holidays, starting with Christmas. We engineered fake snow overhangs to attach to the structure, and clad the entire exterior with custom ½” thick real gingerbread siding (courtesy of Dominique Ansel bakery), which was processed as building material from large gingerbread sheets.
